Unterföhring – school campus officially opened – district of Munich

Finally it can officially shine, the new “lighthouse” among the school buildings in the district. After the celebrations of the various construction progresses had to be kept small due to the corona pandemic, the school family and community in Unterföhring were finally able to open the new school campus with guests and citizens on Friday: with prominent visitors in the morning and hundreds of interested people in the afternoon who visited the site could explore at an open day.

With a usable area of 12,139 square meters, the Unterföhring school campus is the largest school building project in the district of Munich and one of the largest school buildings in Bavaria, as Mayor Andreas Kemmelmeyer (PWU) proudly announced. The meandering school building stretches 350 meters from west to east across the property on Mitterfeldallee. It is home to what is currently probably the most modern high school in the district, the Unterföhring high school with a language and a technical-scientific branch, as well as a primary school with lunchtime supervision and after-school care.

On the site, which also includes spacious outdoor sports areas, outdoor recreation areas, a quadruple gym, a large auditorium, a canteen and an underground car park, a “holistic approach” is being lived, praised the Bavarian Minister of Education Michael Piazolo (FW). The local and district politicians involved, the community, the school administrations around Betina Müsel and Claudia Denzinger and the architects Felix and Jonas from Munich successfully brought together educational and structural aspects. The high-quality equipment of the school building is also a recognition of the work of the teachers, said Family Minister Ulrike Scharf (CSU).

After a construction period of just two and a half years, the grammar school went into operation in the 2020/21 school year, and 630 pupils attend it today. Since June 2021, the younger ones have also been bustling about on campus; today 485 elementary school students attend classes there. Classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, meeting areas, laboratories and even an observatory on the roof are available for visitors to visit in the afternoon.

Of course, all of this has its price. With costs of almost 167 million euros so far, the school campus is the “biggest investment that the community has ever made,” said Mayor Kemmelmeyer. But this money, both the municipality and the ministers agree, is well invested.
