Unterföhring – preparation for hosting the Special Olympics – district of Munich

The European Championships are hardly over and the next big sporting event is already casting its shadow. Unterföhring, Ismaning and Garching want to be good hosts when the Special Olympics take place in Berlin in 2023. The three municipalities in the northern county will then be host towns and will host a delegation of more than 60 athletes, coaches and families from New Zealand from June 12th to 15th. In order to prepare well for this, representatives of the three municipalities recently visited the Special Olympics state games in Regensburg. Around 1000 athletes, 300 coaches and supervisors and 500 volunteers were active there in a total of 16 sports. Birgitt Hölzel and Laura Klein from the Unterfoehringer advice center for families, senior citizens and inclusion took a close look, as the town hall in Unterfoehring reports, in order to recognize the needs of the athletes and their companions. They also presented the medals at the boccia awards ceremony. The Special Olympics are the largest inclusive sports event for people with intellectual and multiple disabilities worldwide.
