Preußen Münster returns to the 2nd Bundesliga after 33 years with a march out of the regional league. The Bundesliga founding member secured promotion on the last third division matchday with a 2-0 (2-0) win against SpVgg Unterhaching and finished the round in second place behind champions SSV Ulm with 67 points.

In third place, SSV Jahn Regensburg (63), who lost 0-1 (0-1) against 1. FC Saarbrücken, is fighting for direct promotion in the relegation. Münster last played in the 2nd league in the 1990/91 season. In 1974, the club was one of the founding members of the then two-part 2nd Bundesliga and was there for a total of nine seasons. The Prussians only played in the Bundesliga in the first season of 1963/64.
