By the time the new building for the volunteer fire brigade is in place on Münchner Strasse in Unterföhring, the connection between the site and the through-town must also be ready. The two lanes to Munich were expanded to include one for left-turners when the major construction site was being set up, and traffic in the opposite direction has since narrowed to one lane. The municipality has now had an investigation into how the traffic routing between Mitterfeldallee and Isarweg opposite the petrol station can be optimized – and then decided to leave everything largely the same.

According to the study, the traffic could be handled without problems with only one straight lane in both directions and four variants for the design of Münchner Strasse are conceivable in this area, all of which aim to reduce the busy town through traffic and thus make it less attractive for commuter traffic. The district office and the state building authority favored variant four, each with only one lane in both directions, wider footpaths and bike paths as well as more green areas and a zebra crossing at the level of the bus stops on Brunnbachlweg.

But nothing will come of it now. The local council voted against this plan with a narrow majority of 13 to 11 votes – and in favor of a minimal solution that the building committee had already decided by a majority at the end of October. This provides that only all old markings are removed and the asphalt surface layer is renewed. Around 310,000 euros are estimated for this. For the implementation of the proposals in variant four, Unterföhring would have had to spend around 1.75 million euros.

While the party-free electorate (PWU) and the Greens defended their rejection of the dismantling of Münchner Strasse in the area of ​​the new fire station, the plans to leave everything more or less the same aroused utter incomprehension among the other parties. CSU parliamentary group chairman Manfred Axenbeck urged variant four before the vote. Unterföhring has been waiting for the through-town to be dismantled for more than 30 years – “and now it is failing because of the Greens because of the costs,” he said, shaking his head.

“The planning does not convince me,” said Green Group spokeswoman Gisela Fischer, for example, there is only one common path for cyclists and pedestrians, said Fischer. “That is no longer appropriate.” The idea of ​​turning the road into a kind of avenue through trees also makes no sense. After all, the road is there for traffic, said Fischer. In view of these statements, SPD councilor Thomas Weingärtner burst the collar: “We shouldn’t pretend something monstrous would happen when the lanes are reduced. That was our wish.” You only have to look to Ismaning, there the entire state road runs through the whole town with only one lane in each direction, said Weingärtner, in order to dispel the concerns of Stefan Zehetmair (PWU), for example.
