No masterclass for the 50th but whistles… The Dutchman had a strange afternoon. His 6th place on the grid promised a festival, which was held back by brake problems. Patient behind Lando Norris (McLaren), he drove economically without escaping his demons: the FIA could have cracked down on the treatment he inflicted on Charles Leclerc (Ferrari).
Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes, 2nd then disqualified): 8/10
Chances reduced to nothing by an irrelevant strategy: he was in for a save! By the time he changed his mind, Verstappen had successfully completed the undercut. Deprived of an explanation with the Dutchman who made us salivate in anticipation, constantly out of breath on the radio, he gave everything. In vain, since his W14 was non-compliant.
Lando Norris (McLaren, 2nd): 8.5/10
He played his luck bravely. After 11 podiums without a victory, it was certain that he was going to starve himself to death at the start. 21 laps leader worthy of a captain and good resistance to Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) despite a McLaren at the end.
Carlos Sainz (Ferrari, 3rd): 6.5/10
Qualified 4th, ranked 3rd: mission accomplished. The Spaniard followed the planned plan after his experimental sprint. A good team player.
Sergio Pérez (Red Bull, 4th): 5.5/10
Still non-existent compared to his teammate but an uneventful race. From P9 to P4: a little miracle that comes at the right time for his race home. Full of confidence and a huge bonus: Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) excluded, he has almost assured his place as vice-world champion.
Charles Leclerc (Ferrari, 6th and disqualified): 6/10
It would be unfair to reduce his failure to his failed start. His 10th useless pole position in a row is starting to wear on him. Sainz had recorded information for him by doing the sprint on “soft” but Ferrari led him on a wrong track at a stop. Disqualified in the end, what a hassle!
George Russell (Mercedes, 5th): 6/10
Everything was decided at the start, with three positions lost and a W14 unrecognizable on “hard”. He used all the tricks, played a lot with the limits of the track without getting caught. Top 5 providential.
Pierre Gasly (Alpine, 6th): 6.5/10
Three places lost at kick-off for “avoid trouble” and more big points. The Frenchman believes he has had his most complete weekend since joining the Blues. He is right.
Lance Stroll (Aston Martin, 7th): 6/10
He comes back from nothing. Starting last in the pit lane, he scores 6 points: the Canadian has more character than you might think.
Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri, 8th): 5/10
Line changes are always just as dangerous when braking defensively, but Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) knows that well too. The Japanese offers 4 points at once to the Italian team, and even the bonus for the best lap! Above all, it shows a little more the limits of Daniel Ricciardo (AlphaTauri)…
Alexander Albon (Williams, 9th): 6/10
No new “medium”, a 5 second penalty and two points dropped from the sky. Three times 11th this year, he has a little luck for once.
Logan Sargeant (Williams, 10th): 5.5/10
Very tender in his attempt to overtake Kevin Magnussen (Haas), the American is not cut out for Formula 1 but the point he recovers is a great story.
Nico Hülkenberg (Haas, 11th): 5/10
Starting from the pit lane to fail at the points gate, he still fell from a height after the hopes aroused by the new pontoons.
Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo, 12th): 4.5/10
The Finn puts his result down to bumps which forced the technicians to sacrifice downforce by raising the ride height.
Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo, 13th): 4.5/10
The same limits as his teammate, with the addition of high degradation of his tires. Little or even no impact.
Kevin Magnussen (Haas, 14th): 4/10
Departure from the pit lane, anonymous race…
Daniel Ricciardo (AlphaTauri, 15th): 4/10
On a stop at the base, as fast as Tsunoda in “medium”, at one point. Too many laps in the rear wing of Nico Hülkenberg’s Haas, dropped off by Logan Sargeant (Williams), four places ahead of his teammate… A little too much of a spectator.
Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin, retirement): 6.5/10
He dreamed better than overtaking Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo) and Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri), and the points were within his reach at the time of his retirement. A spectacular recovery after the bankruptcy of the new package ratified on Saturday evening.
Oscar Piastri (McLaren, retirement): 4.5/10
Four places gained in the first round, then an elimination contact with Esteban Ocon (Alpine). He did not drive in the same category as Lando Norris (McLaren). Coming down from his Qatari cloud.
Esteban Ocon (Alpine, retirement): 4/10
His responsibility lies in his contact with Oscar Piastri (McLaren) but not a word for the Aussie, who was also forced to retire. Regrettable.
