Stuttgart as a football location had a certain image problem for many years. VfB, the city’s figurehead, suffered from constant lack of success, sometimes going up, sometimes down, only rarely at the top. Money was always so tight that this could not possibly be the serious work of a Swabian housewife. The historical image was also shaped by former VfB player Thomas Strunz, who left the kind of meanness behind when he left that continues to have an impact: the best thing about Stuttgart, according to Strunz, is “the motorway to Munich”.
