The 1. FC Union Berlin suffered a late defeat on their debut in the Champions League. The club from Berlin-Köpenick lost 1-0 to Spanish record winners Real Madrid on Wednesday evening. The former Dortmund Jew Bellingham only scored for the Royals in stoppage time. The international press writes:

Spain:

“Marca”: “Bellingham tore down the Berlin Wall. Real Madrid didn’t deserve a draw. The first half was admittedly somewhere between weak, bad and lacking, not to mention worrying. Not a single damn chance to score.”

“Ace”: “It’s never too late for Bellingham. Another goal from the Englishman in stoppage time saved Real Madrid, who wasted the first half and only beat the very well-organized Union Berlin with the final whistle.”

“Mundo Sports”: “In just over 90 minutes of practical lessons, the German team learned that nothing is as it seems at the Santiago Bernabéu. That the Whites find each other when they seem most lost, that the team waits and waits more and more often, without doing much, to finally play when winning is the hardest and the victory promises to be epic. And usually they win.”

England:

“Daily Mail”: “Jude Bellingham wasn’t just born to play for Real Madrid. He was also born to score late, dramatic winners at Santiago Bernabéu. (…) The Germans came with their 5,000 supporters and their clear game plan and 93 minutes “It worked perfectly for a long time. Then Bellingham stuck out his right foot and won the game for Real Madrid.”

“The Guardian”: “Real dominated possession in the first half but struggled to break down Union, who defended resolutely and were impressively led in defense by experienced Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci.”

Italy:

“Tuttosport”: “Mauer Bonucci, a celebrated debut with Union Berlin.”

France:

“L’Équipe”: “Real Madrid got over the wall in the end. Bellingham saved Real again. Carlo Ancelotti’s team had a difficult time against a brave and solid Union Berlin, which only conceded a goal in stoppage time.”

Austria:

“Courier”: “The fans in the Estadio Bernabéu had to wait until injury time before Jude Bellingham redeemed Real. The Royals didn’t disappoint before, they were clearly superior for 90 minutes and created chance after chance.”

Switzerland:

“View”: “The Champions League evening ends brutally for Union Berlin and Zurich coach Urs Fischer. The Berliners lose 0-1 against record winners Real Madrid in the legendary Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.”

“Tages-Anzeiger”: “In the end, the Iron Men still go soft. Urs Fischer’s debutant in the Champions League defends himself against Real Madrid with a lot of luck and a lot of heart – and loses 0-1 with a goal from Jude Bellingham in the 94th minute.”
