UN welcomes deal to release hostages but warns ‘much remains to be done’

  • The Israeli government approved early Wednesday the agreement providing for the release of fifty hostages – women and children – from Hamas in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners and a four-day truce in the Gaza Strip , according to an official press release. “The Israeli government, Israeli army and security forces will continue the war to return all abductees, eliminate Hamas and ensure that there is no further threat to the State of Israel from Gaza.”also states this press release.
  • The entire international community welcomed the agreement reached between the parties. The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, did not wish to say whether any French people were among the hostages whom Hamas has pledged to release. The head of diplomacy declared “hope that there is[it] French people among » them ; “We are working on it and I hope that, tomorrow, I will be able to tell you: “Yes, there were French people””.
  • The Hamas government announced Tuesday that 14,128 Palestinians had been killed in Israeli bombardments on Gaza since the war began on October 7. Among the deaths recorded to date are 5,840 children, the Hamas government said. Additionally, 33,000 people were injured.
  • The Committee to Protect Journalists established on Wednesday thatat least fifty-three journalists had been killed since the start of the war.
  • Two of thirty-three premature babies who were to be evacuated from Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza died during the night before their evacuation, the World Health Organization reported Tuesday. Thirty-three premature babies from Al-Shifa, the largest hospital in the enclave, were expected to be evacuated on Sunday.
  • Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported on Tuesday that three doctors, including two working for the organization, were killed in the bombing of Al-Awda hospital in the northern Gaza Strip., Earlier in the day. The two doctors of the organization “ were in the hospital when [l’établissement] was hit on the third and fourth floors. Other medical staff, including MSF staff, were also seriously injured.said the NGO in a press release.
  • The European Union gave its approval on Tuesday to the continuation of its development aid for the Palestinians, after a review which showed that no funds had benefited the Islamist movement Hamas, but announced that stricter controls would be put in place in the future.
