Guterres called the killing of civilians in the Gaza war unprecedented during his time in office. This wasn’t the first time he attracted criticism. In doing so, he is giving anti-democrats a voice, says the FDP politician.

The FDP defense politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann is UN Secretary General António Guterres sharply criticized for statements about the war in the Middle East.

“The fight for a new world order is in full swing in the worst possible sense. Instead of doing his job, UN Secretary General Guterres is giving voice to the anti-democrats, suppressing the horrors of the wars in Ukraine and Syria and launching attacks on these two that violate international law countries with Israel’s legitimate right of self-defense,” said Strack-Zimmermann, chairwoman of the Defense Committee in the Bundestag, to the German Press Agency in Berlin. She stated: “Guterres is unfit for office.”

Guterres had repeatedly drawn sharp criticism from Israel for his statements. Most recently, he stated that the killing of civilians in the Israeli military’s combat operations in the Gaza Strip was unprecedented during his time in office. He has repeatedly strongly condemned Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack against Israel.
