More weapons and ammunition: According to the Ukrainian Ambassador Makeiev, the federal government has promised new arms deliveries. In addition, there should be no negotiations with Russia as long as Ukraine does not agree.

The federal government has apparently promised Ukraine further arms deliveries. The Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksii Makeiev said in an interview with “Welt am Sonntag”. Makeiev emphasized that he did not want to put diplomatic pressure on the federal government.

“In direct discussions, we were assured more weapons and more ammunition,” said the ambassador. “Which ones, we will announce together in due course.” Anti-aircraft systems, self-propelled howitzers, cheetahs and ammunition are urgently needed in Ukraine.

Leopard tank debate

He is also in talks with the federal government about the delivery of Marder and Leopard tanks, Makeiev said. “But the decision lies with the federal government.”

So far, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has refused to deliver Leopard 2 tanks. The SPD politician justified this so far with the fact that no other NATO country has supplied such tanks.

On Friday, however, the United States signaled that they see no obstacle in this. But it was Germany’s decision, said US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman during a visit to Berlin.

Currently no negotiated solution

The federal government has also assured him that there will be no negotiations with Russia as long as the Ukrainian government does not agree, Makeiev told the “Welt am Sonntag”. “I was given clear assurances that there would be no negotiations with Putin if we didn’t want them to,” the ambassador said.

Ukraine does not need mediators at the moment, but allies, because peace in Ukraine cannot be negotiated, said Makeiev. It has to be fought for.

“When the Chancellor says Ukraine will be helped as long as it needs us, that means by the time the last Russian soldier is off our soil, including Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea, reparations will have been paid and war criminals convicted,” he said Makeiev.

Makeiev took over the post of ambassador six weeks ago from Andriy Melnyk. Melnyk returned to Kiev and is now Deputy Foreign Minister.
