Rarely since 1945 has it been spoken so often and so much in the mode of historical comparison as in these days. With every new piece of horrifying news from the war that we are witnessing and in which we hope not to become direct participants, it seems that the demand for historical certainty grows. In the expectation of being able to better understand the disturbing present, memories are called up and parallels drawn, the cognitive value of which can and must be disputed. But there are also crooked and deliberately false analogies constructed, and this circumstance at the latest shows that history can be used as a political weapon.
