Wagenknecht: Ukraine aid for taxpayers intolerable

Ukraine is becoming “more and more a bottomless pit for taxpayers in Germany and Europe,” says Wagenknecht and calls for negotiations on a ceasefire and a peace initiative.
The left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht has criticized the German promises of aid for the Ukraine sharply criticized. Ukraine is becoming “more and more a bottomless pit for taxpayers in Germany and Europe,” Wagenknecht told the German Press Agency in Berlin. “Here in Germany, the traffic light rules with the red pen, but there seems to be no limit to the Ukraine aid, which consists largely of weapons. This has little to do with solidarity.”
She referred to figures from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, according to which European aid commitments for Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia, now total 156 billion euros – more than twice as much as the commitments from the USA of less than 70 billion euros. For this purpose, the IfW added up commitments from the European Union and its member states with those from non-EU countries such as Great Britain or Norway. In most cases, these are promises of help for several years. A German military package for the years 2024 to 2027 has a volume of 10.5 billion euros.
Wagenknecht has long criticized arms deliveries to Ukraine and European sanctions against Russia. Now she demanded again: “We need negotiations on a ceasefire and a European peace initiative instead of more and more money from Europe for the war.”
