On the second day of the UN General Debate in New York today, US President Joe Biden, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will deliver eagerly awaited speeches. While Raisi and Biden will address the UN General Assembly in the morning (local time; afternoon CEST), Zelenskyj’s video address is scheduled for the afternoon. Because of the Russian war of aggression against his country, Zelensky is the only head of state who does not have to appear in person in New York to give a speech.

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has criticized the threat created by Russia of using nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war as “completely unacceptable”. Russia’s behavior is a “serious threat to the peace and security of the international community,” said Kishida in New York in his speech to the UN General Assembly, quoted by the Japanese news agency Kyodo. Kishida’s constituency is in the city of Hiroshima, which was devastated by an atomic bomb dropped by the US Air Force at the end of World War II.
Kishida became the first Japanese Prime Minister to address the UN General Assembly.

The head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, is promoting the idea of supplying main battle tanks to Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia. “The pictures from the liberated areas of Ukraine are terrible. The Russian soldiers systematically committed war crimes there,” he told the editorial network Germany (RND). “We must now do our utmost to support the Ukrainian armed forces so that they can retake their country and end the suffering of the people. This includes heavy weapons, especially battle tanks, which the Ukrainians now need.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted with demonstrative calm to the announcement of sham referendums on the annexation of occupied areas of his country to Russia. “Our position does not change due to noise or any announcements,” he said in his video address on Tuesday evening. “We are defending Ukraine, we are liberating our country and most importantly we are not showing any weakness.”
Zelenskyj thanked the unanimous condemnation of the Russian plans by many countries and organizations. “We have the full support of our partners,” he said in Kyiv. At the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, he said he wanted to make Ukraine’s position clear and unambiguous. He will be connected to New York via video.
