In the past few days, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has again called for the delivery of modern fighter jets. Great Britain and the Netherlands have agreed on a joint approach. Meanwhile, Olaf Scholz is not promising any participation.

GGreat Britain and the Netherlands want to forge an “international coalition” to supply Ukraine with fighter jets. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte agreed on such a course of action on the sidelines of the Council of Europe summit in Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, a British government spokesman said, according to the PA news agency. “The Prime Minister (Rishi Sunak) and Dutch Prime Minister (Mark) Rutte agreed to form an international coalition to provide Ukraine with air combat resources, from training to procurement of F16 jets.”

In the fighter jet debate, on the other hand, Chancellor Olaf Scholz sees no German contribution. “We’ve focused on that and we’re focused on what we’re doing. This is very relevant now for Ukraine’s ability to defend itself,” Scholz said in Reykjavik on Wednesday. Germany has already made further commitments with regard to tank deliveries, the maintenance of weapon systems, ammunition and the strengthening of air defense against Russian attacks.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the efforts of Britain and the Netherlands. “Yesterday we agreed in Great Britain with Rishi (Sunak), the Prime Minister, that we are working on a coalition of fighter jets – training, aircraft, results,” Zelenskyy reported on Tuesday in his evening video address on the results of his trip to Europe.

During visits to Italy, Germany, France and Great Britain in the past few days, Zelenskyj had solicited extensive new military aid and support for the establishment of a “fighter jet coalition”. After a meeting with Sunak on Monday, Zelenskyj was already optimistic about this.

So far, the NATO states have not wanted to meet Kiev’s demand for modern western combat aircraft. Sunak and Rutte now want to work to “build an international coalition to provide Ukraine with fighter jet capabilities and support them with everything from training to procurement of F16 jets,” the London government spokesman said. In Reykjavik, Sunak also reiterated his conviction that “Ukraine’s rightful place is in NATO.”
