Ukraine: “It’s not about us trusting Putin – we have no other choice”

The war in Ukraine can only end if there are negotiations, says Samuel Charap. The American political scientist and Russia expert explains in star-Interview on how freezing the conflict would work.

Mr. Charap, a debate has broken out in Germany as to whether and how Ukraine-War could be frozen. How would that work in practical terms?
There are different definitions and concepts. Are we talking about Rolf Mützenich’s advance?

Exactly. Mützenich has proposed local ceasefires and humanitarian ceasefires.
That would mean that the weapons would be silent, but there would be no peace treaty. The political problems remain unresolved. That will happen at some point. It’s just a question of when and under what circumstances. There must be a willingness on both sides to end the fighting – and to accept that the front line will be accepted as a border, at least temporarily.
