After the hammer attack on Leonid Volkov, a close confidant of the late Kremlin critic Navalny, the investigation has been successful. Two people were arrested in Poland.
Two suspects were arrested in Poland after the attack on Russian opposition figure Leonid Volkov in Lithuania. This was announced by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda. They are said to have carried out the violent attack on the ally of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. The suspects will soon be handed over to Lithuania, Nauseda told Lithuanian radio.
Neuseda thanked the Polish authorities for their work. There was initially no announcement of the arrest. The head of state of the Baltic EU and NATO country initially did not provide any further information about the two suspects and the possible extradition date. The Lithuanian police did not comment on this either.
Volkov attacked in exile
Volkov, who lived in exile in Lithuania, was attacked in front of his house in Vilnius in March and attacked with a hammer and injured. The 43-year-old had to be briefly treated in hospital. The background to the crime is still unclear.
The Lithuanian secret service blamed Russian special forces, but the Kremlin declined to comment. Volkov blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for this.
Volkov welcomed the authorities’ success in the investigation – without knowing any further details himself. “I have seen how energetically and persistently the Lithuanian police have worked on this case over the past month, and I am very happy that this work was successful,” he wrote on Telegram. “Well, we’ll find out the details soon. I can’t wait.”
