Two Sheffield fans taunt dead boy and are arrested
Two supporters of Sheffield Wednesday football club have mocked a boy who died of cancer and has become a sort of mascot for opponents AFC Sunderland. Now the police are investigating charges of violating public decency.
Bradley Lowery was an ardent Sunderland fan
The men had already been taken into custody on Saturday, and photos of the alleged provocation had previously circulated on the Internet. It showed one of the two Sheffield fans holding up a photo of Bradley Lowery while they both laughed during last Friday’s game. Lowery was an ardent Sunderland fan who became something of a mascot for the club during his battle with a rare cancer. He died in 2017 at the age of six.
A Sheffield Wednesday spokesman condemned the two men’s alleged behavior and said they would support the investigation. “We can only apologize for the distress this has undoubtedly caused to Bradley’s family and friends,” it said. Sheffield lost the home game against Sunderland 0-3.
