The town of Coupvray in shock. Two girls aged 8 and 11 died in the fire of a pavilion in this village of Seine-et-Marne of 2,800 inhabitants about forty kilometers east of Paris. The fire, whose origin was not immediately known, broke out around 3:50 a.m. and completely destroyed the house. Two families were in the building at the time of the tragedy.

Five people were able to escape the flames but two girls remained inside. “A miner tried to take the girls out and was badly burned on his left arm. He was taken to hospital with a life-threatening condition,” a police source told AFP. The bodies of the two victims were found in the rubble during the day.

The Meaux public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation to determine the causes of the fire and entrusted it to the Chessy police station and the departmental security.
