Two French nationals were arrested in Iran, announced Thursday, May 12 the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has “condemned this baseless arrest” and demanded their “immediate release”. The Ministry “was informed of the arrest of two French nationals in Iran”according to a statement that does not specify their identity, the day after Tehran announced the arrest of two Europeans “entered the country with the aim of unleashing chaos and destabilizing society”.

“The French authorities are fully mobilized”and “the ambassador in Tehran made representations to the Iranian authorities to obtain consular access (…) and the charge d’affaires of the Iranian embassy in Paris was summoned to the ministry”specifies the Quai d’Orsay.

The Iranian authorities are holding several foreign nationals prisoner, for reasons deemed political by Western countries, which consider that Tehran is using them as a means of pressure in negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue or to loosen the grip of international sanctions.
