The governor of the Kherson oblast, in Ukraine, announced this Thursday, February 1 that two French humanitarian workers were killed in the south of the country, in Beryslav.
“Foreign volunteers were killed and injured following an enemy strike on Beryslav,” Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram, relayed by the Kiyv Independent.
According to the governor, three other foreign humanitarian workers were injured. “Among the injured is also an activist from the organization’s Ukrainian representation,” he added.
A region at the heart of the conflict
Since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, the Kherson region has been hotly contested by the two armies. Russian troops control areas south of the Dnieper River, after their withdrawal last year from the city of Khersonthe regional capital, regularly targeted by bombings.
“The Ukrainian Defense Forces continue their efforts to expand their bridgehead on the left bank of the Dnipro River in the region of Kherson“, the army general staff said in its morning report on Monday.
