Twenty-five criminal gangs operate on the Island, according to a police memo

It is a sort of inventory of banditry in Corsica that we find in this confidential note from the general management of the National Police. today revealed by France 3, this note of March 18, 2022 estimates that there are 25 criminal gangs operating on the island. That is about 150 active people. And the police mean by “gang” groups that may in fact consist of only two or even one person. Most often, they each have an activity in a small region of Corsica. We also learn that this note is not exhaustive and is even potentially scalable.

What are these groups doing? “Extortion actions, but also today, as we can see, linked to drug trafficking, specifies with France 3 Corsica Jean-Jacques Fagni, prosecutor near the Bastia Court of Appeal. There are also money laundering operations, which can put pressure on the local economy. All of this of course will lead to rivalries on the part of these organized crime groups which can result in extremely violent acts. »

Finally, the local station of France Télévisions notes that this list marks a change in banditry in Corsica. As the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, had already explained, on a visit to Corsica last summer: “Where before there were very organized groups of somewhat clannish crime, which were based on a history, now there is a kind of atomization of criminality, of people coming out of these clans; of these groups, and in particular with narcotics, make a lot of money apart from what the history of Corsican banditry has known. »
