Türkiye: Injured cave explorer speaks out

Injured cave explorer reports from 1000 meters depth – preparation for rescue underway

STORY: The rescue of an injured cave explorer continues in the Taurus Mountains of Turkey. Mark Dickey, 40, was on an international exploration mission in Morca Cave when he suffered gastrointestinal bleeding at a depth of about 1,000 meters. International rescue teams reached the American and provided him with medical care. A video released by the Turkish Civil Protection Authority on Friday showed the situation on site. Dickey himself also reached out and thanked his rescuers: “I want to thank everyone who is down here and for the response of the caving community. The world of speleologists is a really tight-knit group, and it’s amazing how many people have responded on the surface.” Exactly when and how the American will return to the surfaces is currently unclear. Preparations for a rescue are underway. According to experts, the rescue operation could take a few more days.
