Türkiye: Fifth central bank chief in five years fights against hyperinflation – Economy

His predecessor resigned because of an alleged character assassination campaign. Now Fatih Karahan has to fight against hyperinflation. And that with a president who also prefers to follow his own rules economically.

In principle, Hafize Gaye Erkan, who was governor of the Turkish central bank until Friday, behaved like an ordinary Istanbul resident. Like almost everyone in the Turkish metropolis, she complained about the high prices. Erkan returned from the United States last summer before President Erdoğan appointed her to head the bank. And, Erkan said in a recent interview, she couldn’t find an affordable apartment in Istanbul. The 44-year-old asked whether it could be that Istanbul is more expensive than Manhattan? She and her little daughter moved in with her parents for the time being.
