Children are a sensitive consumer group, so care must be taken when it comes to baby and children’s food. It’s better to avoid a product at the moment.

Kassel – Parents only want the best for their children – that’s why some buy extra organic baby food. But the products do not always contain only healthy nutrients. Plant substances that can be toxic have now been found in a manufacturer’s product. That’s why the product, which was also sold by the drugstore chains dm, Rossmann and Müller, is now being recalled nationwide. This children’s food is:

The reason for the recall is the discovery of tropane alkaloids, a wild herb that grows in grain fields. It is almost impossible to prevent the plant from being harvested together with the grain and thus ending up in food.

“Tropane alkaloids are natural plant substances. They are formed by various plants as protection against feeding,” explains Johanna Michl, food chemist at Eco test. “In the worst case, these compounds can even contaminate an entire batch of grain.” This is why flour has been recalled several times.

Toxic plant substances in baby food: symptoms and return option

The manufacturer itself provided information in a noticethat traces of tropane alkaloids were found in a routine analysis. Since babies and children are a particularly sensitive consumer group, the decision was made to issue a recall. He further warns: “Trace amounts of tropane alkaloids can lead to temporary symptoms such as a hoarse voice, motor restlessness, reddened skin or dry mucous membranes.”

If the children show no symptoms in the 24 hours after consumption, there is no reason to worry. Concerned parents can contact the poison control center, among other places. The product affected by the recall was sold at dm, Müller and Rossmann, among others. The drugstore chain branches have already been notified by the manufacturer. Affected customers can return the baby food to the store where the product was purchased – even without a receipt. Alternatively, it is recommended to discard the product.

Recalls also occur again and again at large supermarket chains; Rewe and Penny recently recalled numerous sausage products.
