Tinsel is a glitter decoration on the Christmas tree, which the satirist Loriot has firmly anchored in the language. Loriot’s grandpa Hoppenstedt mocked at the family Christmas party: “There used to be more tinsel!” IG Metall boss Jörg Hofmann referred to the old-fashioned glitz when he announced that they were considering “deleting the tinsel from our statutes”. In concrete terms, this also meant that dual leadership in the union should be possible for the first time – also to avoid a power struggle.
