The electricity provider Stromio stops delivering to its customers without warning. They now fall into the basic service. Previously, the network operator had turned off the juice of the energy discounter, which also includes scandal provider gas.de.

The world is still all right on the Stromio homepage: “Safe switch to Stromio – the electricity trader you trust”, it says, combined with the promise: “You can rely on that.” In fact, Stromio’s customers can no longer rely on anything: The electricity provider has stopped delivering to its customers with immediate effect.

As of Wednesday, customers will no longer receive their electricity from Stromio, but from the local basic supplier. That means: You are not sitting in the dark because a complete supply is guaranteed in Germany. But you have to pay significantly more because the basic service is expensive. Several hundred thousand customers are likely to be affected.

Network operators throw Stromio out

The reason for the immediate delivery stop: The four transmission network operators 50 Hertz, Amprion, TransNetBW and Tennet have terminated their contracts with Stromio at short notice. “Stromio could no longer meet its balancing group obligations,” said a 50Hertz spokesman for the DPA. Stromio himself has not yet commented, including one star-Inquiry initially remained unanswered.

The delivery stop plays against the background of rapidly increasing energy prices. At the beginning of December, Stromio’s sister company gas.de stopped supplying households with gas without warning. The company from Kaarst, which also operates under the Grünwelt brand, sees itself as an “energy discounter” and has advertised for years with low new customer prices. In view of the high purchase prices for energy, this is apparently no longer economical, so that the company wants to get rid of customers despite existing contracts. Stromio and gas.de have not yet registered for bankruptcy.

What customers should do

The portal recommends affected customers Consumer help electricity providersto revoke the direct debit authorization or to cancel the standing order so that no further advance payments are made from the account for services not provided. In addition, Stromio customers who do not want to pay the expensive basic supply of the local provider should look for a new provider as soon as possible. Classic comparison portals such as Verivox and Check24 or alternative exchange helpers, so-called tariff watchdogs, help.

Stromio is one of the cheap energy providers that has attracted attention over and over again in recent years. After all, cheap new customer prices are often followed by customer annoyance about non-transparent price increases, unaccepted terminations or delayed bonus payments. As early as 2017, we reported in detail here on the business methods of the black sheep among electricity providers. The unannounced delivery stop fits seamlessly into this picture.
