Debris from a drone has been discovered several times in Romania. The NATO state then summons the Russian ambassador. Below is an overview of current events in the war in Ukraine and an outlook for the day.
After another discovery of drone parts in the Romanian Danube Delta, the Foreign Ministry in Bucharest accused Russia of violating the NATO country’s airspace. As a sign of protest, the Russian ambassador was summoned.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is expecting the first visit from the Ukrainian president for the upcoming general debate at the UN General Assembly
NATO informed about drone debris in Romania
The newly found debris belonged to a “drone similar to those used by the Russian army,” the Romanian foreign and defense ministries agreed on Wednesday. NATO allies have been informed and are discussing developments on the Romanian-Ukrainian border, it said.
An alliance spokesman said in the evening after a meeting of the permanent representatives of the member states that NATO stood in solidarity with Romania. However, there is no evidence of a targeted attack by Russia on Allied territory.
Last week, debris from drones that resembled Russian-made drones were found in two places near the village of Plauru, the Defense Ministry said. Plauru is less than 500 meters from the Ukrainian port of Izmail, which had recently been attacked by Russian combat drones. NATO classified these incidents as not being intended by Russia.
Guterres expects Zelensky to attend the UN General Assembly in New York
No political breakthroughs are expected at the UN General Assembly in New York – where Zelensky and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov are also expected. It is the largest diplomatic meeting in the world, so the Ukrainian president will have a big stage.
“I will receive President Zelensky,” said UN Secretary-General Guterres. The 74-year-old Portuguese firmly expects the Ukrainian to visit, even if he has not yet made any official travel plans public.
From Monday, more than 140 heads of state and government are expected at the UN headquarters on New York’s East River. The debate starts on Tuesday and lasts a week.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will also travel to the event. It is eagerly awaited whether Zelenskyj and Lavrov could meet on the sidelines of the debate or at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
Kiev: Stronger Russian attacks at Avdiivka and Mariinka
The Ukrainian military is now reporting increased Russian attacks on the front in the eastern Donetsk region. “If we talk about the East, then the situation in Maryinka and Avdiivka has worsened,” Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maljar said on Ukrainian state television on Wednesday.
“The Russians have increased the shelling there. They have also launched assault attacks there.” At the same time, Maljar emphasized that the Russian army had been trying in vain to take the two places for around a year.
