Long journeys often have a small drawback: Jet lag. The temporary disruption of the sleep-wake cycle occurs when passengers fly through multiple time zones. The reason: After fast travel, the body’s internal clock is not synchronized with the time at the destination.

These complaints can occur

Symptoms of jet lag can range from difficulty sleeping and tiredness to dizziness, loss of appetite and general malaise. Many people experience jet lag more strongly when traveling east. Even though the symptoms usually seem to disappear after a few days, they can still ruin the start of your vacation. However, with a few tips this can be avoided or mitigated.

If you prepare for the new times at your destination a few days in advance, it will be easier for you to cope with them on vacation. For example, meals and naps can be adjusted before departure. Sleeping on the plane ensures a relaxed start to your destination. Pillows, sleep masks and earplugs can help. Otherwise: lots of water keeps the body fit, and you should stay away from coffee and alcohol while traveling. Some experts also recommend skipping airplane food and fasting before landing.

Another tip is to take a flight that lands during the day. Daylight makes it easier to get going in your new surroundings. You should then quickly adapt to the new time zone and resist the urge to lie down again during the day or just take a short nap. It is said that if the time is less than 45 minutes, a power nap is most beneficial. Anyone who explores the area around the hotel on foot after arriving will do a lot to ensure a safe arrival in the new time zone. Eating light meals at the usual times at your vacation destination also makes it easier to adapt.
