Bayer Leverkusen manages a transfer coup. The Rhinelanders sign 21-time national player Jonas Hofmann from Mönchengladbach.
Football National Player Jonas Hofmann is moving from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Bayer Leverkusen. The 30-year-old has signed a contract with his new club until June 30, 2027, as announced by Bayer 04.
According to a report in the specialist journal “Kicker”, Leverkusen used an opt-out clause in the offensive player’s Gladbach contract. It should be in the range of ten million euros. Hofmann’s departure is a bitter loss for Borussia.
“Thanks to his game overview, his excellent technical skills and his experience, he is the type of player we were looking for for our squad,” said Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes in a club statement.
Goal-threatening creative player
Hofmann only extended his contract in Gladbach until 2025 in August last year, including an option for another year. The experienced and dangerous creative player should play a central role in the newly formed team after the departure of several top performers. Hofmann was even considered a candidate for the captaincy under the new Gladbach and former Leverkusen coach Gerardo Seoane.
“I’m very grateful to Borussia for the past seven years. I had an outstanding time there,” said Hofmann, adding: “Lately, however, I’ve had a stronger feeling of wanting to do something new. Bayer 04 fits in with these thoughts, the club has been one of the top German clubs for years and is also always ambitious internationally. The team is exciting and has an incredible amount of quality.” Hofmann was “really interested in this next chapter”.
In January 2016 he moved from Borussia Dortmund to the Lower Rhine. In Mönchengladbach he developed into a respected leader. Last season he scored twelve goals in 31 games in the Bundesliga. Hofmann has appeared 21 times for the German national team. The 2022 World Cup participant scored four goals.
