Tramadol, hip prosthesis… Frédéric ran from hell to “miracle”

Addicted to marathons and Tramadol. And we must see a cause and effect relationship. We follow the thread of the race of Frédéric Hurier, 47 years old. In 2016, he completed his first 42.195 km in 5h30. Which made him want to try the distance again in 2017. There, he stopped after 20 km with terrible pain in his hip. “I didn’t know it, but it was the last time I ran for a while. »

In 2022, after having experienced hell and becoming addicted to the most consumed opioid in France, Frédéric Hurier is finally operated on by a doctor who fits him with a custom-made hip prosthesis. After a lot of rehabilitation and an impressive weight loss, the Parisian resumed running and completed his marathon in 4h27. In 2023, he improves his performance by finishing it in 4h13. For him, each marathon is a stage of life. On April 7, he will once again walk the streets of the capital. “The Paris marathon is the story of my second life, of the way I seek to build it, to deserve it and to be proud of it. »

Frédéric Hurier did his first marathon in 2016. After a painful marathon in 2017 and the fitting of a custom-made hip prosthesis, he returned to running and is taking part in the Schneider Electric Marathon in Paris on April 7, 2024.– Farah Birhadiouen / 20 Minutes

For as long as he can remember, Frédéric Hurier has always been sporty. “When I was young, I wanted to be a PE teacher so I completed a Staps license, before obtaining my state judo certificate and my Capes to be able to teach. » If judo has been his sport, “running has always been present in my life, whether for training or for Staps competitions. »

From a “terrible” situation to a “miracle”

But due to lack of preparation for his marathon in 2017, the consequences were clear: Frédéric Hurier injured his hip, had to stop running and to “relieve the pain” relied on Tramadol. “I had a lot of difficulty accepting offers from doctors who did not want to operate on me. I wanted to find a way and continue doing sports since it was such an important part of me. » Combined with depression and weight gain, Frédéric Hurier characterizes this period as being “terrible”.

Hope is reborn after his operation. “There, I was fitted with a prosthesis which considerably changed my life. I remember getting up and putting my foot on the ground talking about a miracle. » More motivated than ever, Frédéric Hurier returns to the race and aims for the 2024 Paris marathon to reduce his best performance by thirteen minutes to drop below four hours. “This feat will validate and confirm my progress thanks to my four training sessions per week, the perseverance I have shown. » And on the starting line on April 7, Frédéric Hurier knows he will be “happy”. “I’ve been here for two years, and I feel lucky about this second life. »
