In view of the high fuel prices, the federal government had agreed on a temporary tax cut on fuel. More details are now becoming known in a draft.

Cheap fuel for the summer vacation: Minister of Finance Christian Lindner wants to implement the planned tax cut on petrol and diesel from the beginning of June to the end of August.

This emerges from a draft law that is available to the German Press Agency. During this period, the energy tax rates for the fuels used in road traffic are to be reduced to the European minimum. According to earlier information, this amounts to 30 cents per liter for petrol and 14 cents per liter for diesel.

The leaders of the traffic light coalition had agreed on the temporary measure to relieve citizens and the economy when fuel prices rose sharply after the outbreak of the Ukraine war. So far it was unclear from when this should apply. The plans of the Treasury Department must be approved by the cabinet and the Bundestag before they can come into force.

Discounted public transport tickets should also come in June

For the same period in summer, the federal government is also planning discounted tickets for buses and trains in local transport. The Federal Ministry of Transport wants to quickly clarify open questions about the implementation of the planned local transport discount. That said a spokeswoman for Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) on Monday in Berlin on request. The ministry has a great interest in implementing the “9 for 90” ticket as quickly as possible. “Coordinations with the countries and the industry to clarify the open questions are ongoing.” The aim is still to introduce the ticket by June 1st at the latest.

The leaders of the SPD, Greens and FDP had decided that a ticket for local public transport (ÖPNV) for 9 euros per month should be introduced for 90 days – so that drivers can change in view of the high fuel prices. The prices for petrol and diesel have now fallen significantly again and were recently below 2.00 euros per liter. Because of the high taxes, Germany has one of the highest fuel prices in Europe.
