Anyone who uses the motorway in Austria has to pay – so far at least for ten days. That should change from 2024, but the planned daily vignette is actually only really worthwhile for very short stays.

In Austria, a one-day vignette for motorways will be offered for the first time next year at a price of 8.60 euros per car. Previously, a ten-day vignette had to be purchased even for short stays or transits. “The one-day vignette will be particularly interesting for day guests and transit travelers,” said a representative of the Austrian drivers’ club ÖAMTC to the German Press Agency.

The government made a corresponding decision this week, which still needs to be passed by Parliament. This step implements the European Union’s so-called infrastructure costs directive, which stipulates that daily tariffs must also be offered when tolls are staggered.

For German drivers, however, the new vignette is not worthwhile for short trips with an overnight stay or for week-long vacations in the south with a return trip Austria: The price for the ten-day vignette will be raised from 9.90 to 11.90 euros next year, but will still be significantly cheaper than two one-day vignettes. The motorway operator Asfinag initially did not want to comment on how high the need for a 24-hour toll is estimated.

The fee for the two-month vignette will fall slightly from 29 to 28.90 euros in 2024. The annual vignette will still cost 96.40 euros.
