The third generation of the Toyota Aygo gets the X in the name and thus a crossover look. The Japanese carmaker does not use electrification or hybridization for the small car.

The Japanese are often as precise as clockwork. Seven years after the last Aygo hit the market, Toyota is now adding the third generation. As the letter X in the name suggests, the city flea follows the crossover trend and lets the body flit eleven millimeters higher over the asphalt. The series version thus follows the Aygo X Prologue study, which was presented in March of this year.

Unlike the concept vehicle, the small crossover, which will be available at dealerships in the second quarter of next year, with a fabric roof that can be opened backwards, plays the lifestyle card. There are also modern lacquer tones such as Cadamon Green, Ginger Beige, Chilli Red and Juniper Blue. In the interior, the joy of colors continues with colorful applications and seating patterns. The design of the fittings is also less strict than that of other models from the Japanese manufacturer. With the large hood, the cockpit is reminiscent of a motorcycle and the nine-inch display is enclosed in a round frame. A 300 watt system including a subwoofer ensures adequate sound reinforcement.

The third generation shares the GA-B platform with the Yaris and the Yaris Cross and has increased its dimensions compared to its predecessor. It now brings it to 3.70 meters and is at least 23.5 centimeters longer than before. However, at 2.43 meters, the wheelbase only increases by nine centimeters, which still promises more spacious interior space.

In terms of width, the plus is still 12.5 centimeters. This means that the passengers now have 1.74 meters to sit next to each other. The fact that the height of the urban Japanese has increased by five centimeters to 1.51 meters is a logical consequence of the crossover concept. Compared to its two Yaris technology brothers, the Aygo X has shorter overhangs. The trunk has a volume of 231 liters (plus 60 liters compared to the predecessor), if you fold the back seats, it becomes 829 liters. However, the narrow hatch should make loading difficult.

The fact that tires up to 18 inches can fit into the wheel arches shows that the crossover should be a class bigger. Nevertheless, the turning circle remains fairly small at 9.40 meters and is therefore compatible with the city center. The one-liter three-cylinder has an output of 52 kW / 72 PS and, like the rest of the drive train, comes from the Toyota technical arsenal. In addition to the continuously variable S-CVT transmission, there is also a five-speed manual gearbox to choose from. No hybridizations are currently planned. However, the Japanese manufacturer already offers full hybrids on this platform. Whether these will also be used in the cost-sensitive small car segment is currently still in the stars.
