Tourism: Overnight stay numbers in July still below pre-crisis level – Economy

Visit Cologne Cathedral, swim in the Baltic Sea or hike in the Bavarian Alps: summer holidays in Germany remain popular even after the Corona years. The number of guest overnight stays rose by 1.4 percent to 57.1 million in July compared to the same month last year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced. However, compared to July 2019, the comparable month before the pandemic, the number of overnight stays was 2.9 percent lower, so the desire to travel has not yet returned to pre-crisis levels. The outbreak of the coronavirus and the associated lockdowns and travel restrictions have had a severe impact on tourism and the hospitality industry over the past three years. The situation has now stabilized again: the number of overnight stays by domestic guests in July was 46.9 million, almost identical to the same month last year. At the same time, more travelers are coming from abroad again, although not nearly as many as before the pandemic. The number of overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 8.6 percent to 10.2 million compared to July 2022, but was still 8.1 percent below the pre-crisis level in July 2019.
