Tour de France live in the ticker | The 2nd stage from Roskilde to Nyborg over the Great Belt Bridge

The favorites for overall victory include the two Slovenians Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Primoz Roglic and his teammate Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma).

After the rainy start in Copenhagen, the second stage will probably remain dry. However, the focus of interest is on the wind.

Wind staggers could tear the peloton apart directly on the coast. That’s why it’s important to be on guard right from the start and take up positions at the front of the peloton.

The sprinters are the favorites to win the day. But in order to be able to fight for victory, they first have to get to the finish line in the first group.

17 km – Honoré, Morkov and Lampaert fight their way through the convoy

The two Danes in the Quick-Step team help their yellow jersey: Mikkel Honoré and Michael Morkov bring Belgian Yves Lampaert back into the peloton. It’s comparatively quiet at the front of the peloton at the moment. The expected wind shifts do not appear on the bridge.

20 km – fall from the yellow jersey!

It gets hectic on the bridge, then two tires come into contact and a whole group of riders immediately crash – right in the middle: Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) in the yellow jersey. But he quickly jumps back on his bike. He’s not left behind without a chance.

20 km – Off to the bridge

Now it’s up to the bridge over the Great Belt. The street there is very wide, plenty of room to fight side by side for positions. The question is: Who opens the wind squadron where and when?

22 km – fall of Uran and Vermaerke

Just before going onto the bridge, there is a fall in a roundabout – right in the middle: Rigoberto Uran (EF Education – EasyPost) and Kevin Vermaerke (Team DSM).

32 km – Bystrom posed

After 170 kilometers, Sven Erik Bystrom is now at the front of the race – and the peloton is heading towards the bridge over the Great Belt. The speed is repeatedly increased before the bends, but then throttled again.

44 km – defect at Vlasov

Bora – hansgrohe captain Aleksandr Vlasov is stopped by a defective rear wheel. Nils Politt stops with him immediately. The wheel change is quite quick and the duo makes their way back to the front, where Marco Haller is also waiting for them at the end of the field.

50 km – calm before the storm

No wind relays so far – the peloton stays together and is still riding in a controlled manner. Accordingly, Byström remains the sole leader. His lead increased to a minute and is now 40 seconds. But be careful: there is a good breeze blowing on the bridge over the Great Belt.

60 km – Bystrom leaves Cort Nielsen behind

Sven Erik Byström attacks and loses his companion Magnus Cort Nielsen. The Dane then falls back into the peloton, but Bystrom’s advance will almost certainly secure the prize for the most combative rider of the stage and thus the red shirt number for tomorrow. Byström’s advantage over the peloton is still 25 seconds.

3:30 p.m. – Things are getting more nervous in the peloton

We are approaching the west coast of Seeland and thus the more wind-prone passages of this 2nd stage. Accordingly, things are getting a little more nervous in the peloton. Now nobody wants to go too far behind if wind relays are actually opened. A little more than 70 kilometers are still to be driven and the two leaders Cort Nielsen and Byström are almost caught – only about 30 seconds ahead.

75 km – Ewan fastest at intermediate sprint

Team Jumbo – Visma prepared the intermediate sprint in Kalundborg in the peloton and started for Wout Van Aert. But the fastest there was Caleb Ewan. He takes third place behind the two leaders Cort Nielsen and Byström, Van Aert is fourth and Fabio Jakobsen fifth.

100 km – distance at 3 minutes

At half-time, Cort Nielsen and Bystrom are almost exactly three minutes ahead of the peloton. Your two pursuers from the B&B Hotels – KTM team have meanwhile dropped back into the peloton.

2:30 p.m. – 3 out of 3: Cort Nielsen takes mountain jersey

Magnus Cort Nielsen sprints away from Sven Erik Byström and then gets up on the top of the Cote de Karup Strandbakke to celebrate: The Dane won all three mountain prizes of the day.

Arms up! Nielsen celebrates the first mountain jersey during the stage

130 km – Second hill climb for Cort Nielsen

Cort Nielsen and Byström reach the climb to the second mountain prize with a 15-second lead over the two B&B pursuers. So the Scandinavians can concentrate fully on their duel – and then the Dane doesn’t give the Norwegian a chance. Cort Nielsen will take over the mountain jersey tonight.

1:59 p.m. – Cort Nielsen takes first mountain point

The B&B Hotels – KTM team tried to exploit their numerical superiority and attacked with Barthe in front of the mountain prize. But Cort Nielsen and Bystrom countered and then left the two Frenchmen behind shortly before the scoring. Cort Nielsen gets the mountain point and the two Scandinavians continue alone.

150 km – First mountain prize awaits

Cort Nielsen, Rolland, Barthe and Bystrom are now 1:45 minutes ahead – not much, but enough to win the first mountain prize of this tour in ten kilometers. There is a point at the Cote d’Asnaes Indelukke. Ten and 20 kilometers later, two more mountain classifications in the 4th category await. So a total of three points will be awarded today, and one can be sure: the four breakaways will fight each other right away in order to be allowed on the podium after the stage.

180 km to drive – Quartet only gets 1:30 minutes

The peloton picked up speed. After the breakaway group around Cort Nielsen was initially let go and the gap quickly opened up, the gap now only fluctuates around 90 seconds.

12:40 – Let’s go – and immediately there is a breakaway quartet!

About two kilometers later than planned, it finally starts! Prudhomme lowers the starting flag and a Dane immediately attacks: Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education – EasyPost) is the first to dismount. He is followed by Pierre Rolland and Cyril Barthe (both B&B Hotels – KTM) as well as Sven Erik Byström (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert) – and the group of the day is set immediately. The peloton drives on very calmly and slowly, Quick-Step spreads out at the front of the field on a narrow road and seals it off so that no other driver can attack. The quartet is easy to control.

12:38 – Sharp start delayed

Exactly on the minute at 12:35 p.m. the peloton rolled past kilometer 0 on the outskirts of Roskilde – but tour boss Christian Prudhomme did not give the go-ahead for the race. The reason? Lotto Soudal’s Tim Wellens had a defect in neutralization – and shortly afterwards the same goes for Ineos Grenadiers’ Adam Yates. The rule book states that the peloton must continue to roll neutralized until all riders are back together in a group. So it will continue to roll – in front of huge crowds of spectators on the side of the road.

12:25 – National anthems in central Roskilde

The neutralized start has already taken place, but the peloton now stops again in the center of Roskilde. There are many spectators and a boys’ choir sings first the French and then the Danish national anthem.

INFO – Favorites of the 2nd stage

Even if it can be assumed that the peloton will break up on the bridge over the Great Belt and only a decimated peloton will fight for the day’s victory, there will still be sprints on the home straight in Nyborg.

The top favorite for victory is therefore the top sprinter who has made the cut in the wind on the bridge and is still in the lead.

Fast-paced classic specialists such as Wout Van Aert (Jumbo – Visma) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Deceuninck) are candidates for victory, but Fabio Jakobsen should probably have the best cards. He is considered to be the fastest man in the peloton and is well prepared for wind relays with his team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl.

INFO – Welcome!
