TotalEnergies withdraws from Burma, pressed by human rights NGOs

The French oil and gas group TotalEnergies confirmed on Wednesday that it has now withdrawn from Burma, six months after making the announcement, pressed at the time by human rights NGOs after the military coup in 2021.

“TotalEnergies has definitively withdrawn from Myanmar”, announced the group, noting that “in accordance with the six-month notice period provided for in the contracts, this withdrawal has become effective”.

Departure announced since January

The group thus withdrew from the Yadana gas field and from the gas transport company MGTC, of ​​which it was a shareholder and operator. Since January, TotalEnergies has “undertaken the steps to ensure its withdrawal in a responsible manner vis-à-vis its stakeholders in Myanmar, in particular its employees as well as the local communities supported for a long time”, explains the group.

He adds that he “worked closely with PTTEP, the Thai national company, which has been designated as the new operator by the project partners, to guarantee the continuity of production” and ensure that all its employees are offered jobs with the new operator.
