Ten days ago it almost looked like harmony. When the four experts presented their economic forecast, the researchers high-fived like American basketball players. For Volker Wieland, however, it was the last high five. On Saturday, the 56-year-old Frankfurt professor unexpectedly announced that he was leaving the so-called economic experts this month. Wieland’s departure increases the ambiguity in the government’s most important economic advisory body. And this at a moment when the expertise of the experts is needed not only because of the dispute over the gas embargo against Russia.
