“Yesterday was shit”: Skateboard legend Tony Hawk is in the hospital after an accident

The professional skater Tony Hawk was world champion several times

Skateboard legend Tony Hawk reports from the hospital. The 53-year-old broke his thigh. On Instagram he posted x-rays and a video showing him on crutches.

“Yesterday sucked,” begins Tony Hawk’s Instagram post. The 53-year-old skateboard pro broke his femur. The American does not describe exactly how the accident happened. “I broke my elbow 20 years ago and managed to make a full recovery; recovering from a broken thigh will be much more difficult due to the severity (and my age). But I’m up for the challenge,” he adds.

Ironically, the accident happened a day before the release of the trailer for a documentary about the athlete entitled: “Until The Wheels Fall Off”. Sam Jones’ film about the life and career of Tony Hawk is all about the question of how he and other professional athletes manage at their age.

Tony Hawk: Skateboarding shaped my identity

“The answer is complicated,” Hawk continues, “but ultimately it’s because skating has given me meaning and formed my identity, and it feeds my mental health immensely. I’ve said many times that only then did I will stop skating when I am no longer physically able.”

The broken leg will “probably be the biggest test for this credo” for him. Still, he believes he’ll make it back to skateboarding: “Maybe not fully, but I resigned myself to that thought years ago as I approached ‘middle life’,” he reveals. Finally, he thanks his “unyieldingly supportive, tolerant family” and everyone else “for the love and support over the years; I wouldn’t be here without you. See you on the other side,” he concludes the post.

Hawk’s career began in the 1980s. In 1999, he became the first skater to do a two-and-a-half turn in a halfpipe, attracting a great deal of media attention. In all, he won eleven world skateboarding titles.
