The toboggan run on the Riederstein has the advantage for hikers that they are at the top of one mountain inn can warm up before they whiz down into the valley. However, the tavern is closed until February 17th. Company holidays. A chapel sits 150 meters above sea level, offering a great view of Lake Tegernsee. The way there can be walked in winter, but it is not marked. Tobogganing is not possible from there. But then again from the inn on the 1.7 kilometer long, mostly cleared forest road. It takes just under an hour to climb the 280 meters uphill, but only ten minutes downhill. The toboggan run can be slippery in some places and is more suitable for families with older children, also because of the slope. There is no possibility to rent sleds at the inn.

Hirschberg

The toboggan run on the Hirschberg near Kreuth cannot quite compete with the neighboring summit, the Wallberg, with its 6.5 km long descent. But at least five kilometers and 600 meters of difference in altitude await the sledder here. There is no ascent aid in the form of a lift. From the Kreuth district of Scharling, you follow the forest road to the Hirschlache, which is reached after one and a half to two hours. This is where the toboggan run begins, which takes between 20 and 30 minutes. Once a year, at least when there is enough snow, there is even a competition on the Hirschberg: Year after year, more than 100 enthusiastic sledgers race down into the valley at the big prize toboggan run by the Kreuth toboggan club.

On Saturdays it is two kilometers long toboggan run even illuminated from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Toboggans can be hired at the Blombergbahn valley station. Information on snow conditions is available by calling 08041/3726.

monument

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle at Brauneck, you can do so in Lenggries monument tackle on the other side of the valley. This excursion destination offers sledders two variants of descent: the same route as for the ascent, or you can climb another 100 meters from the hut in the direction of Keilkopf until you come to a forest road. This is less steep and therefore easier for children to master. The starting point is a parking lot in Bachmaiergasse near the Isarwellenbad. The ascent with 300 meters of altitude to the Denkalm takes 45 minutes, the descent from there is done in ten minutes. There is no sledge rental there, but at the “Lenggries” ski school in the Draxlhanglifthaus (08042/3636). You can ask whether there is enough snow for tobogganing at the Denkalm on 08042/2770.

You can toboggan at the Ski school “Isarwinkel” can be borrowed at the Brauneck cable car.

The illuminated toboggan run from the Oberen Firstalm down to the Spitzingsee with a difference in altitude of around 270 meters has a decisive advantage: if at lower altitudes the slope operators often still struggle to make a tobogganable run out of the few flakes, here, 200 meters higher, there is usually a lot of snow.

And there is another reason why the Obere Firstalm attracts many families: the incline of the forest road, which begins at the Spitzingsattel, is moderate and therefore easy for children to manage. In three quarters of an hour, hikers can reach the mountain inn, where sledges can also be hired. You cover the 2.5 kilometers down in about a quarter of an hour. Ascent and descent are on the same road, so caution is advised. Alternatively, tobogganists can also take a hiking trail to the Lower Firstalm and from there continue to the Upper Firstalm.

Hornle

4.5 kilometers of tobogganing fun is possible on the Hörnle near Bad Kohlgrub. Especially the upper area has it with its slope, further down the descent on the wide forest road is more relaxed. A total of 550 meters of difference in altitude are mastered, the descent takes about 15 minutes. If you want to save yourself the hour and a half climb, take it the mountain railway. Sledges can also be hired at the valley station if required.

It takes two to two and a half hours to get from Oberammergau to the (closed in winter) August Schuster House climb up the Pürschling. Up there, a five kilometer long, unprepared descent awaits the tobogganist, on which you can cover the almost 750 vertical meters to the car park at the end of the lift path in Unterammergau in about 30 minutes. Since the toboggan run is also used for the ascent, tobogganists must watch out for oncoming tobogganists and ski tourers.

A classic is the toboggan run from from the St. Martins Hut on the Grasberg down to the Bayernhalle in the municipality of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There are not many routes that combine a comparatively short ascent (just under an hour) with a beautiful, not too steep descent (two and a half kilometers long) and such a brilliant view of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Wetterstein Mountains. The snow conditions on the toboggan run can be seen in the St. Martin’s Hut can be requested by calling 08821/4970. The descent down the 300 meters in altitude takes about ten minutes.

The large ski jump is of course one of the landmarks of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In this respect, it should not be difficult for sledders to find the starting point for the toboggan tour from Eckbauer in Garmisch. From the car park at the ski stadium, the path leads alternately through forest and over humpback meadows to the same-named trail mountain inn. The descent takes place via the disused ski slope of the Eckbauer. It is a total of two and a half kilometers long and is quite steep, especially in the lower part. Especially the last slope at the height of the ski jump can be icy.

At 6.5 kilometers, the toboggan run on Wallberg is the longest natural toboggan run in Germany. During the approximately 30-minute descent, you cover a total of 825 meters in altitude. The route is steeper in the upper section, and posters warn of tight bends. Especially before a few switchbacks you have to brake hard. Below, on the other hand, the sledgers can run their vehicles against it. tobogganing at the valley station be borrowed.
