To transform priority neighborhoods, the State relies on agriculture

The objective: Transform “priority districts” by focusing this time on… agriculture! Following a call for projects launched in 2020 by the national urban renewal agency, eight districts of the Lyon conurbation were selected to participate in the “France Relance” plan. Concretely, it will be a question of building “urban farms” there and developing short circuits.

If “urban agriculture makes it possible to improve the quality of the landscape” and to provide “healthier food”, it can also “generate new jobs in the territories” and “contribute to social diversity”, argues the prefecture of Rhone.

3.5 million euros released

The State will therefore inject 3.5 million euros to support the construction of shared gardens and an urban farm in the ZAC du Mas du Taureau in Vaulx-en-Velin, the construction of an “Agricultural hall” in the Duchère district in Lyon, the construction of a “sowing farm” in Rillieux-la-Pape, the creation of a “micro farm for integration” in the Clochettes district in Saint-Fons, the creation of a shrub and fruit tree nursery in the Belleroche district of Villefranche-sur-Saône, the creation of a “fertile plateau” in the Minguettes district of Vénissieux, the development of the “Ilot vert” project, located in heart of the Saint-Jean district of Villeurbanne as well as the creation of an urban farm in Givors.

The project led by the Mermoz district in Lyon was also selected. It consists of cultivating aromatics, raising fish in an urban environment and building a neighborhood food center.
