From a dingy district on the edge of the Wall to a hip international hotspot: the Berlin district of Neukölln has had an amazing career.
The city magazine “Time Out” has Berlin-Neukölln has been named one of the world’s coolest districts. “Once a small village on the outskirts of Berlin, Neukölln is now by far the most exciting district in the city,” wrote the authors of the online magazine published in London. From restaurants to clubs, exhibitions and walking opportunities, Neukölln offers everything, it said.
Between family-run grocery stores and good cafés, Neukölln shows the “multicultural feeling” that characterizes the district. “Neukölln celebrates these differences and also fights for them: protests and demonstrations often take place in front of the Neukölln town hall or on Hermannplatz.”
The magazine’s list includes a total of 40 neighborhoods in different countries around the world. Included are neighborhoods in the USA, the UK, Japan, Ghana and many more. Neukölln is the only German district mentioned.
