These extraordinary drone footage show the impressive movements of a flock of sheep in Israel.

They were taken by photographer and drone pilot Lior Patel. The 42-year-old comes from Haifa in northern Israel. He implemented the video project together with a shepherd family who lives just a few kilometers south of his hometown.

More than a thousand animals live in the herd, which is owned by two Israeli farmers. In the video, he documents the transition from the winter grazing areas to the summer pasture – the animals have to cover a distance of about 7 kilometers for this.

Patel was particularly impressed by the skills of the shepherds who work for the farmers:

“Mustafa and his family manage the herd in an exemplary and fascinating way, also with the help of the shepherd dogs.”

From the very first encounter with the animals, he was enthusiastic, Patel continues:

“I was fascinated by the impressive movements of the herd and I wanted to understand the elasticity during their movement.”

The result is these fascinating recordings that are now spreading all over the world. Users on social networks are amazed and share their associations on Twitter under the video:

“I’m torn: Some of the images remind me of blood flow in vessels or moving lymphocytes. Others remind me of moving molds.”

“What I find really exciting is how some of the sheep stop and graze, for example. But as soon as the end of the herd approaches, they regroup.”

“If you look really closely, you can see small, fast collie spots at the end and edges of the herd.”
