Til Mette: The star illustrator looks back on the year

Anyone who regularly follows the news can sometimes feel like crying: this year, a new front has been added to the many wars and crises, from the climate to the Ukraine. At the same time, more and more citizens are getting the impression that the current federal government is having problems getting to grips with all the problems.

It’s a good thing that Til Mette exists. The illustrator comments week after week star current world events and ensures that we don’t forget the humor in all the overheated debates and worries.

Whether it’s a climate catastrophe, right-wing populism or the eternal controversial topic of gender – Mette brings something funny to everything and thereby makes the world more bearable. At the same time, the cartoonist always lets an attitude shine through in his drawings. Nothing is trivialized or made light of here.

Til Mette about Til Schweiger

When the polar bear on the floe floating in the sea says to his child: “Forget Greta Thunberg. She has a different hobby now,” then Til Mette recalls the painful polar ice caps and at the same time expresses a certain lack of understanding that the global The climate movement “Fridays For Future” has recently appeared more with one-sided statements on the Middle East conflict than with actions to protect the environment.

But the illustrator, who was born in Bielefeld in 1956, also has room for wonderful nonsense. So he dedicated a cartoon to his namesake: “Schweiger’s first film since his alcohol crash?” a woman asks in front of the cinema where “Fanta, Fanta” is being announced.

If humor doesn’t help anymore, Mette also has a way out: “Which wine goes well with the end of the world?” a customer asks the dealer.

Of course, wine should remain the last resort. As long as Til Mette’s cartoons exist, there is still hope in the world.

Til Mette’s most recent publication was: “Cartoons for friends of freedom, democracy and a good bottle of wine”, Lappan, 128 pages, 16 euros. More on the publisher’s website
