Til Mette: Review of the year – the year 2022 in 24 cartoons

Rarely has a year been so dominated by a single event as 2022. It was Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine that left its mark on the past year. Almost all other problems and events are related to it: the energy crisis, the debate about arms deliveries to Kyiv and the state aid summarized under the term “double boom” to keep electricity and gas affordable.

All of this can also be found in the annual review, in which Til Mette reviews the past twelve months. But the star-Zeichner picks up many more topics that almost fell into oblivion in view of the overwhelming power of the war. On the one hand, there is the unabated climate catastrophe and the growing protest against the inaction of Western governments. In 2022, however, there were also debates about anti-Semitism at the Documenta or the sale of German infrastructure to China. To name just a few topics.

Condensed in Mette’s drawings, readers can watch the year pass by once again. You will rediscover many a memory-lost event – and laugh heartily more than once.

Til Mette: About the person

Til Mette was born as Gotthard-Tilmann Mette in Bielefeld in 1956. As a student he drew caricatures. While he was still studying to be a teacher, his drawings appeared in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” and the “Frankfurter Rundschau”. In 1985 he was one of the co-founders of the “taz” Bremen, where his cartoons were regularly printed. At the beginning of 1996, a Mette cartoon was published for the first time star. Since then he has been the magazine’s permanent illustrator, with new drawings appearing every week to this day.

Mette is also active on the book market: Lappan Verlag published its first cartoon book in 1991, and many more followed. “Politically correct cartoons for left-green filthy do-gooders” was recently published. Til Mette will be publishing his next book in four weeks: “Cartoons for Friends of Freedom, Democracy and a Good Bottle of Wine” will be published on January 27th published by Lappan and can already be pre-ordered. The artist lives in Hamburg with his wife and two daughters.
