Why do so many men think about the Roman Empire?

When was the last time you thought about the Roman Empire? If you believe the current TikTok trend, this era seems to concern a surprising number of people – more precisely: men.

The corresponding hashtag #RomanEmpire has already received more than a billion views on TikTok. In the clips, women ask their partners/husbands how often they think about the Roman Empire. A large proportion of those surveyed (an exact analysis would be disproportionately time-consuming due to the sheer number of video clips) stated that they think about the Roman Empire either almost every day or at least three to four times a month.

DThe impression is clear: partners of Tiktokers really often think about this topic. What’s more: you can specify an exact frequency. Now it’s the case that mainly those clips are uploaded in which something happens, that is, in which the unusualness of the expected reaction is reinforced. It therefore remains unclear how many of those surveyed responded with “never”.

A short survey in the stern.de newsroom revealed a slightly different trend: Of the men who took part (others, as with Tiktok, were not included), 20 percent said they thought about it “one to three times” a week. the rest answered “never.” However, this result is of course in no way representative.

But where does the trend with this irritatingly specific question come from? The “Business Insider” portal found out that a reel video on Instagram from August of this year was behind it. The user “GaiusFlavius” asked women to ask their partners/husbands/fathers/brothers the question about the Roman Empire. This trend then apparently spilled over onto Tiktok with great force.
