A final hope? The 28th United Nations climate conference in Dubai is “the last chance” to meet the limit of 1.5°C of warming, the most ambitious objective of the Paris agreement, John Kerry warned on Tuesday.
“This is the last COP where we will have the chance to be able to keep 1.5°C alive,” the American envoy declared during a meeting with representatives of the countries debating in the night of the compromise proposed by the Emirati presidency of COP28, rejected by many countries for lack of an objective to exit fossil fuels.

“Many of you have called on the world to largely move away from fossil fuels,” and “this requires a decisive reduction in this decade,” he declared during a closed-door meeting. “I think most of you refuse to participate in a charade,” he added during this meeting convened a few hours after the publication of the draft agreement.
“I don’t think anyone here wants to be associated with a failure to carry out that responsibility. Few people in public life have to make life or death choices in history,” John Kerry said, before asserting that this was “a war for our survival.”
