On the grounds of a farm in the US state of Kentucky, a man stumbles upon a remarkable find: 700 gold coins from the American Civil War. According to experts, the “Great Kentucky Treasure” could bring in several million dollars.
More than 700 gold coins from the American Civil War have been discovered in a corn field in the US state of Kentucky. The coins from the “Great Kentucky Treasure” are now being offered for sale by the website GovMint.com and could fetch millions of dollars in total.
A man discovered the hoard of coins earlier this year on a farm in Kentucky. The exact location and the identity of the man remained secret. However, GovMint.com released a video taken by the man showing the find. “This is total madness,” the man can be heard.
The coins are said to date from the years 1840 to 1863. Part of the find are 18 very rare $20 Gold Liberty coins that were minted in Philadelphia in 1863. According to GovMint.com, collectors sometimes pay six-figure sums for such a coin.
“The importance of this find cannot be overstated,” said coin dealer Jeff Garrett, who was contacted by the anonymous finder. “The incredible number of more than 700 gold dollar pieces represents a true time capsule on coins from the American Civil War era.”
Kentucky had remained neutral during the Civil War between the Northern States and the Southern States (1861-1865), but had been drawn into the conflict nonetheless. “The ‘Great Kentucky Treasure’ may be a result of this conflict, the coins were lost for more than 150 years,” said Numismatic Guaranty Company, which certified the discovered coins.
