Victor Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs suffered their 16th consecutive defeat (121-112) in the NBA at home to Chicago on Friday, tying the franchise record set last season. Last in the Western Conference (3 wins – 18 losses), the Spurs were in the lead at half-time but let the match slip away again in the third quarter.
For his part, the French prodigy Victor Wembanyama (19 years old) had a solid match (21 points, 20 rebounds, 4 blocks) but remained clumsy shooting (8 out of 20). With this performance, for only his 20th game in the NBA, the giant (2.24 m) became the youngest player to achieve a “double” double-double with more than 20 points and 20 rebounds, surpassing the performance of Dwight Howard in 2005 (which was closer to his 20th birthday).

The problem is that he’s doing it on a team that’s still struggling to figure out what it’s called. Even if, from a loser’s point of view, she already knows what she’s talking about. Indeed, the Spurs had already lost 16 games in a row last season and finished last in the west in the spring (22 wins – 60 losses), a poor record which allowed them to obtain the first draft choice and therefore to choose Wembanyama in June.
“Everything is going well in my life, that’s the only downside for the moment. Of course it’s hard, I feel the difficulty, but I never feel despondent, there is no other choice,” commented the Frenchman about the sad series. San Antonio travels to Houston on Monday, a team against whom they obtained their first success of the season at the end of October. Do we ever know.
