What a relief ! After having failed with a breath during the 4th stage of the Tour of the Alps, Thibaut Pinot took his revenge, Friday April 22, on the fifth and last stage to offer himself a success on the roads of Lienz (Austria). And how ! In the good breakaway, he first extricated himself with a group of climbers including David de la Cruz (Astana), who was then his companion for more than 60 km. In the last ascent, the Spaniard gave up a few meters but came back on the descent before giving in, in the sprint, against the Franc-Comtois.
Other good news in the tricolor clan, the victory of the general classification goes to Romain Bardet, impressive in the Stronach. He disgusted the competition, starting with Pello Bilbao, then leader, to extricate himself with his teammate Thymen Arensman and spin towards victory in general. They cross the line more than eight minutes after Pinot, but have subdued the Bahrain-Victorious formation which dominated the debates on this Tour of the Alps. Bilbao finally crossed the line 40 seconds after Bardet.
