“They kidnap your child digitally!”: Expert gives parents safety tips

Watch the video: “People kidnap your child digitally!” – Expert gives tips on how to deal with children’s photos on social media.

Influencer Sarah Adams has taken up the cause of child safety on the internet.

Under the name “mom.uncharted” she gives tips on how to deal with children’s photos on the Internet and points out to parents the possible dangers of careless handling of private photos on social media. More than 250,000 followers have subscribed to the mother-of-two’s channel from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

As an example, she shows an account on which “stolen” or copied children’s photos are posted together with the claim that the children shown are put up for adoption.

“Accounts like this steal pictures of your kids and there’s not much you can do about it. Parents, you need to be aware of the dangers lurking on the internet. People are kidnapping your kid digitally!”

In addition to the general warning, Sarah Adams lists everyday situations that pictures should not be shared, including:

Pictures from the bathtub, pictures of naked or semi-naked children, potty pictures or pictures of embarrassing or traumatic moments.

She goes on to explain which information should not be shared:

The full name, date of birth, name and address of the school and in general all personal information concerning the child.

In this context, the German Children’s Fund emphasizes that it is important “that adults, especially parents and grandparents, deal consciously and considerately with their children’s personal rights on the Internet.” Many postings are questionable from the point of view of children’s rights, since they are often posted without the children’s consent. This contradicts the children’s right to participation. In addition, property rights are at risk because the images are often publicly accessible and can thus fall into the wrong hands.
